2013 GLAMORGAN LADIES’ COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP - 3-5 April

The Glamorganshire Golf Club in Penarth hosted the 2013 County Championship and the Association are grateful to the Club and Ladies’ Captain Karen Blatchford for their support.
The championship consists of one 18 hole qualifying round from ladies’ tees with the best 16 scores qualifying into an automatic draw for the following days.
The Qualifying Day was very cold and extremely windy with sub zero temperatures taking into consideration the wind chill factor. It was immediately obvious that scoring would be difficult for the competitors in the high wind and the dry crusty conditions created by the icy north east wind which would persist throughout the Championship.
Several current County players were absent, including the holder Katie Bradbury of Cottrell Park. Fauve Birch now playing out of the Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club led the qualifiers with Jill Joseph of Creigiau one shot back.
17 year old Fauve who made her County debut last July made the most of her position as top seed and won her first to matches comfortably to give her an interesting encounter with Creigiau’s young university student Katie Westphal.
Jill Joseph won her 1 st round game but then came up against Pyle & Kenfig’s Cheryl Weston who though 2up with 2 holes to play was made to go to the 20 th hole before securing a semi-final encounter with Christina Williams.
Cheryl’s match with Ridgeway’s young Christina was always a one sided affair, with the young player going about with her usual gay abandon, allowing Cheryl’s consistent golf to win through 5&3.
Fauve’s match with Katie Westphal was always intriguing. Katie had beaten the 2011 Champion, 17 year old Georgia Lewis of Southerndown the previous afternoon. Although golf has taken a back seat to her studies, Katie was striking the ball well and long. She was 1up after 5 where she had tangled with the trees but managed a good half, but she missed a short putt on the 6 th green to lose her lead and Fauve holed from about 10 foot for a birdie at the short 7 th . Katie’s confidence on the greens deserted her and a series of missed chances gave Fauve a 3&2 victory and a place in the final.
After a poor chip on the 1 st hole in the final, Fauve holed a good putt for a par to take first blood. Although neither player found the green at the short 2 nd Cheryl chipped in for a birdie and the match was all square. The next 2 holes were exchanged and the 5 th was halved. Cheryl found the water on the 6 th and when Fauve holed for a birdie 2 on the short 7 th she found herself 2 down. Fauve increased her lead on the 8 th and again at the 10th , but Cheryl never gave up and won the 11 th and 12th holes bringing the definite back to 2 down. Fauve went further ahead on the 13th and with halves at the next 2 holes, Fauve finally took the Glamorgan Crown by 4&2.
The cold windy conditions were not ideal for good golf throughout the event but all the players showed great mental fortitude and they all need commending for coping so well.
The Bronze Championship final took place in the morning and was between two young players, 16 year old Megan Blunsden from the home club and Cottrell Park’s 13 year old Eleanor Lewis. With excellent long game abilities both showed great potential but on the day Eleanor came through to win the trophy by 3&2. In tricky conditions both were shaky on and around the greens but when they can conquer chipping and putting they will be very useful additions to the County Team squad.
